What a brilliant way to end the year!
Spanish National TV channel, RTVE, has featured Language Beyond Borders in their news section. This is invaluable exposure for an organisation as young as we are and we have already started receiving offers of support from volunteers and others after they saw the clip on TV.
LBB founder Mabel Prieto spoke about the work that we are doing in Language Beyond Borders. The clip featured Silvina Frisso, a volunteer English teacher living in Madrid, and Obeida, a Syrian student living in detention on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. Obeida explained how he fled Syria after refusing to fight in the military.
Seeking simply a safe place to live, he ended up surviving on a remote island with no definite end in sight. The English classes have since given Obeida something to focus on, while he waits for resettlement, and his English language skills have won him the right to work on the island.
It’s a real honour to be able to tell not only Obeida’s story, but to talk about the impact of the work we are doing and to showcase our brilliant volunteers!
We are very grateful to RTVE for their interest in the project, and wish them, and all of our community a very happy and hopeful new year!
