Ahmad & Shaima are graduates of the Gaza Sky Geeks Code Academy, which enables Palestinians to earn incomes in the tech sector by empowering them through coding and online freelancing bootcamps.
As freelancers, they now have access to a global employment market, but with English as the international language, the skills they are learning in class with LBB are essential in order to unlock opportunities with potential clients and colleagues online.
They both attend class with Helga, a Language Beyond Borders volunteer teacher, as part of the initial GSG pilot, and all involved are very happy with how things are going! Ahmad said of his classes “It’s my first experience with online learning, I think this is very cool and makes you more focused on the lesson than regular learning. It is an amazing experience. I hope to do it more in the future” Of her students, Helga said “Although I didn’t know much about their culture, they are really open and ready to explain to me anything I don’t understand. I like that I learn from them, too.”
Classes with LBB benefit not only the students but also our volunteer teachers. So many of our teachers report having learned a great deal about their students’ cultures and we see this exchange as a positive step to building bridges and depolarising our divided world.
In addition, our students learn about their teachers’ realities and cultures, and we believe deeply that having volunteer teachers from all over the world, both native and non-native English speakers alike, also helps to build this bridge of mutual respect and understanding and bring us all a little closer together.
